SO THIS HAS BEEN KIND OF ROUGH AND FAST FOR TEAMMATES! Especially Yosuke, who has been at what Rin assumes to be a certain height of stress what with
- shouldering responsibility for dragon game (which he voiced his thoughts on pretty clearly already; that was completely honest, and he has entirely put any Hanamura-Caused-This thought out of his head) - and then cannibal monster
Yosuke was THE pivotal role in Rin deciding he needed to go to that game on a far more personal level than just "Yukio is going" - specifically because he stressed the point of the team being strangers, and the conversation happened after Yukio stressed he himself was trying to do something for the team. In the end the answer there was that even IF everyone was strangers, Rin couldn't stand by either, not because of some belief he could make a heroic difference or anything, but just 'cause he believed it still mattered. And was Going To Matter. Going through the game honestly just verified that =') He doesn't think him being there... did anything... plus everyone was already pretty insistent that it wouldn't! But if he has a better grasp on reality and what his teammates are going through he'll have a better grasp of how to be a teammate, so he needed to be there for. That. That was a thing.
He can tell that Yosuke was at a certain drop-out point, because he wasn't panicking, just... DEEPLY UPSET. Rin doesn't have a lot of Deep Reads on people's personalities, just situational; He doesn't have a grasp on how Yosuke might be just... hanging out at school? Basic Conversation?? But he understands his responses so far and understands guilt and fear and feeling overwhelmed =') that's all just stuff Rin recognizes, so he at least feels like he can talk to Yosuke on a level there. They're the same age, Yosuke feels fucked in a situation where a normal person would feel fucked; a lot of basic stuff like being frustrated or minor bicker-banter is all familiar! Plus Yosuke gave him his room for the night even though he was clearly tired himself, which was a very appreciated gesture. Between the other two teenage boys on his team, Cheshire being the other one - and Cheshire mostly gave him a HARDBOILED EXPERIENCED WELCOME TO HELL speech - he is more comfortable with Yosuke, even though he's not sure if they'll be Fast Friends or anything. Rin and friendship is vvvery complicated, though.
Speaking of which the fact that Yosuke and by extension basically everyone has not freaked out over his tail and implied nonhumanity is not unwelcome. The fact that Cheshire was a cushion there is like whaaaaaaaaa
HE LIKES BOTH OKUMURAS SO FAR which is actually kind of ???? wat do now for him because he has a rough history with Canary so having Canaries that agree with him or that he feels like he can relate to is... weird... and he doesn't completely trust it.
On that note, he does feel like Rin is relatable /o/ like he likes Yukio well enough but he feels like Yukio's really detached and Does Not Understand Some Things Well whereas he finds Rin to be a lot more approachable. And a lot of Rin's responses to things just made sense to him because they're pretty much similar to how he responds to things so without really thinking about it he just sort of identified Rin as a fellow Dumb Boy and automatically feels just friendly towards him in a sense...
He doesn't really have a deeper connection/SOCIAL LINK started there because he did just flat-out bottom out emotionally during dangerdragon and kind of has been just too tired to deal with... anything really... and has settled into doing simple surface-level motions for now. Except for freaking the hell out at the start of dangerdragon about eating people :') but he's honestly so relieved that the entire team didn't make him go through with it (Rin included) that he's just like YES OKAY I LOVE YOU GUYS :') idk tho that's... vaguely stockholm-y... not in the sense that Canary did anything wrong but more in the sense that it's not really a healthy productive sort of teamdere.
He thinks Rin's kind of an idiot for insisting on going to dangerdragon and that really just served to jack up the guilt feelings because Rin wasn't even there when they messed with dragon s-so \:D/ i owe you one buddy... tho that's not why he offered Rin his room, yosuke is a dumbass but he's oddly protective of people and like. Here have this food or this place to stay is how he does it, he's not so good at words and being supportive that way.
And then just :|a like if Rin was like BUT I HAVE A TAIL he'd probably be like YEAH THAT'S WEIRD BUT SO WHAT??? because he's had so many non-human friends at this point (especially the empty bear costume shadow monster thing) that it's like ??? what does that have to do with whether or not we can be friends... it's very likely he'd make untactful comments about it but that's more cuz he doesn't think before he speaks and less because it actually bothers him at all.
basically anyone from p4 + franship is vvvvery uncomplicated, it's like the one thing they're all good at :')
I... I'm sorry that the baseline for you feeling safe with your team is that we didn't force you to eat people. IT'S OK THAT'S JUST ONE GAME WE'LL SEE IF WE CAN KEEP THE PACE!!
Rin comes from a background of being ENTIRELY FRIENDLESS up until VERY RECENTLY, and the Very Recent Friends all straight up abandoned him when they learned what he was and he had to HELLA EARN THEM BACK in very different ways so Rin literally never assumes things are going to be friendly, even casually. He's quite happy when they are though. He won't really bring up his demon-ness as a point of contention, he'll just be happy that it isn't one if such is displayed (and he met your bear so he's just like ...... ok then). As for lack of tact I'm sure that won't be a problem, his friends don't have any either ='D
BASICALLY PROBABLY HE'S GOING TO JUST. HAVE SOME SOCIAL HOLES. Even chatting with Yosuke again is like [oh we're chatting '-'!]
someday I'll explain my bear and it will be even more special
the bear that he invited to live with him and apparently lives in his room (I wish they'd put that in-game instead of off-screen like I want to know how he sold his parents on that one. I just assume they're absentee parents and were just like OH WHAT SURE HONEY WHATEVER YOU WANT)
but actually he's pretty standard dumb teenage boy so he'd probably think it was super badass and cool if he ever learned that rin was the literal spawn of the devil :|a

He has no idea he's so confused
Elliot is saying really nice things that someone screaming at him shouldn't say?? like "you did the right thing you should be proud" and "you're not an animal stop acting like one"
RIN DOES NOT UNDERSTAND... I... I HAD TO EJECT MYSELF FROM THE CONVERSATION SO I WOULD BE ABLE TO CALM DOWN AND THEN ATTACKED YOU SO WHY IS YOUR REACTION TO SAY I'M NOT AN ANIMAL?? This whole engagement is making Rin SO GUILTY AND STRESSED OUT at his inability to keep his shit under control so that's coloring his reactions, plus his own panicky instincts once physically grabbed took his reactions out of his control. Elliot DID, HOWEVER, force him to snipe out the kind of thing Rin would never voice! UNSURE HOW TO FEEL ABOUT THAT!!
He does not even understand. He doesn't... dislike him, though... sob
Incidentally I had originally planned on bringing teams that suicided back to life between rounds, but I was just so proud of Canary's teamwork I couldn't bring myself to do it.
Rin thinks Red Romeo (who he is only going to call by his full name because that's clearly the coolest) is kind of a brodude and prrrobably Too Cool For Rin, but he has white hair and looks awesome and kind of normalized a conversation for Rin so he felt better after talking to him. Even though all he did was swing his sword around like an idiot. I WARNED YOU BRO. He suspects he's some kind of actual traveling swordsman hero from an anime which is kinda exciting.
Meeting new people here is REALLY... WEIRD... but maybe because the situation is so crazy nobody gives a crap that Rin himself is kinda weird?? Liking people on other teams seems complicated and he can't help but think about it a little for now (plus people approaching him and chatting him up is a new experience; he didn't think it would be difficult to just Avoid The Other Teams), but once he's actually just TALKIN TO SOMEONE LIKE DANTE he's just like 8I; i-it's harder not to just talk though. Once he can maintain a better mood and be less Initially Guard Up against people he meets (probably only one meeting is required) he will be much more chipper. So now that they have MET he will be kinda cheerful to see him.
REALLY THIS IS A SIMPLE ANSWER BUT RIN HAVING A SIMPLE ANSWER AT THIS POINT IN TIME FOR HIM HAS SOME LAYERS he thinks you're cool
I LIKE SIMPLE ANSWERS because simple answers are all Dante's got too. APPROACHED BECAUSE HE HAS A SWORD, WILL REMEMBER BECAUSE HE HAS A SWORD.
But no really Dante thinks Rin's okay, a nice guy to talk with whenever he feels like talking with someone. He seems like his type to talk to! There is this CALL IN HIS BLOOD to pick a fight with him but after seeing the terribad sword wielding he is putting those thoughts on hold until Rin gets back his skills or whatever and can actually give a good fight. Dante is actually super eager to fight with someone ANYONE right now, because he has no idea if he can fight or not and clearly the best way to figure that out is trial by fire. Rin is now a prime candidate for this if Dante doesn't finally punch Vergil first.
Also interested in Rin because of mild demon pings. Dante has no idea he's half-demon or anything like that; he just knows there's this... itch inside him to fight, especially certain people like Vergil. Now he gets that itch from Rin (and I guess he should be getting them from Yukio?? idr your canon's details on Yukio) and it has him interested!
OVERALL POSITIVE he will probably forget Rin and Yukio are even related because he has no concept of family and why it would be important that you are related anyway, but Rin'll stick out in his memory as an individual who is kinda cool and also has a sword.
Rin acutally has no idea how to be punching friends with someone. PUNCHING FRIENDS ISN'T GOOD, AND YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT. Spent his WHOLE LIFE ignoring the call in his blood =D; However he has a lot of animal instincts right now and he wants to TRAIN, so if Dante wants to recreationally beat him up he may not say no ='D
as of NOW, absolutely zero pings from Yukio, all the pings are from Rin.
ALSO I HAVE TO EDIT CALLING THE GAMES "GAMES" I'M GONNA MESS THAT UP SO OFTEN SOB
Ok though like. LIKE I'VE SAID ABOVE Rin thought it would be a lot easier to just. Avoid people. He has been avoiding people all his life, and he knew he'd feel guilty and also WEIRD chatting with people on other teams considering the circumstances. But actually talking with others now is like... oh... it would be even weirder to not at least acknowledge that everyone is in a really shitty boat and exchange some serious baseline empathy. It just became immediately clear to him that most everyone (most...) is just... normal people, and families are split up, and he's really offended on their behalf. It was BAD ENOUGH to essentially choose to BOTH DIE, he can't imagine how much he'd be wigging out if he didn't get to at least see what was going on with Yukio during that game.
He likes Kaoru fine! It is extreme circumstances in which they are meeting or talking at all, and what they are talking about is also extreme circumstances. It's all very surreal, and he's not really sure how to have the conversation, so he's just talking. He instinctively immediately wanted to just Not Attack Any Team With Those Three On Them, but he already knows he can't just say or even do that, and that feels real ugly. The talk with Kaoru is the first real reality hint of how hard this is going to be. It mostly makes him wish it was easier. '-'
This is all stuff that he's not thinking about consciously, but: it's also kinda strange to him to be... not the unwilling "focus" of a world-shaking event. The last thing that totally changed his life like this was that he awoke as Satan's bastard son, and everything from then on was about how HE will potentially fuck up. So the fact that everyone HERE seems to be a mix of also-remarkable but also-normal, but all in this same awful boat with the same awful choices to make and things to survive, makes him feel like he has a little wiggle room to just... actually connect, since they're all dealing with something on the same level. Kaoru seems normal, and though he stared at his tail first like Every Talk He Has, they talked about the same experiences and how life generally went there. It's very different, not really BETTER or WORSE, just something that further makes Rin unsure of how to socially interact.
HE FIGURES NOBODY REALLY KNOWS THOUGH ='D
Anyway he's glad to have met someone like Kaoru. He'll probably be checking on him.
J E A L O U S but he doesn't have the energy to really express that . . . But yes, he is definitely jealous of Yukio and Rin getting to be on the same team and wishes so badly he could just pull his bros into Shell somehow. He's just so worn down and tired and feeling ineffective that he can't muster up the energy to actually focus on that feeling so it's kind of just background noise.
His interest in Rin right now is really pretty vague aside from that. He only cares about him in the sense that he's Yosuke's teammate and, so far, seems like a guy that has the potential to not make Yosuke pull his hair out with frustration all the time, so he wants to be supportive of him because of that. Yosuke's his closest platonic relationship off his own team so he's really invested in making sure things are going well for him, and Rin could be useful in that regard.
Basically he is tired and sad and really wants to be left alone but understands Rin is decent and therefore likely a useful connection to make and hang on to for Yosuke's sake. TREAT MY FRIEND WELL WEIRD TAIL GUY '-'!!! That said he also does legitimately hate that Rin's first game was dragons and feels it was disgustingly unfair and that Rin and Yukio both should have sat out but . . . they're more honorable than he is. :( In the end he just feels kind of awkwardly guilty for valuing selfishness (as he tells himself it is lately) more.
RIN AND CANARY IS JUST KINDA... he's still honestly reeling from the being here in the first place part. THIS IS WHAT I AM FINDING ESPECIALLY FUN ABOUT SOMEONE WITH MEMORIES BEING GIVEN A TEAM! It's not a given they're allies all the time, it's not a given they "get along" and he already has preconceived notions of what a team is like and what a team is FOR. So getting basically... "here's your team, you murder people together" is like... shriek, what?? what????
Plus Canary ENTIRELY introduced themselves as WE SUCK AT TEAM, and Hatter introduced himself as I'M CANARY'S PET MURDERER =)
So, Rin doesn't really feel any concept of "solidarity" whatsoever. Everything he feels is completely situational; these are the people he has to work with, and they have to work with him, and they are boxed off and live together! So far he's just feeling each of them out as individuals, not as a whole. All he's got so far is how they responded to that dragon game which had only an extreme conclusion. Half of them seem to like March while also just describing scenarios in which March pushes them around, and after meeting March he has literally zero idea how that might happen other than stockholmes...
Even with Yukio, it's just kind of... lol. They have kinship going for them, but every time they have operated as as team he's had to claw his way in, and then Yukio brushes him off at the end. It's what he wanted, but not like this and they both know nothing will be achieved between them overnight =') Plus the last upset between them was caused by Yukio being closed-off and brushing Rin's concerns off. He at least trusts them to *operate* like a good team, because he knows they can do that!! They'd be a great team damn it!! But. Mentality, lol, and teamworking for this stuff... He is still gravitating towards Yukio when it comes to settling in, though.
So uh. Rin likes Canary, while simultaneously having no solidarity as Canary. Going along with the team didn't have anything to do with BEING A TEAAAM, it just had to do with... what he wanted to do as a person. He isn't OPPOSED to Canary. It just. Ain't happening overnight =') It's very much a situation he's been flung into that calls itself a mess. However, he can't really... conceive... not being a mess, in this type of place, so he's not sure if a well oiled competition machine would. Feel better.
THE ESSENTIAL FIRST CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE ON ANOTHER TEAM
He's so glad he was able to just be like "w...what the fuck, though, how do we even interact" at someone who understood that. That was by far the most instant click he had his first day interacting with people offteam. Not that he thinks it is now TIME FOR FRIENDSHIP, friendship with Rin is very complicated, but he understood at least. It felt like. Reality?? In the midst of extreme discomfort and unreality and nerves.
Other than that, after the next game, since Dave mentioned actual pep talks, he may seriously get some fucking crayons and stick a crayon drawing to Copper Rose's door...
He also is. Unsure what to do with Dave AND DIRK (who he put together were related) telling him they were probably going to look out for his team Just Because due to their brother. He's still pretty scared of all this in his gut, and also scared of people just disappearing into bullshit portraits, especially in the context of losing a brother. So that was comforting, and he's grateful, a little suspicious, and guilty for being suspicious... mostly, he feels like they're both really cool for even being able to say something like that. Dave's a little younger than him too so it's kinda double.
SO DESPITE HAVING DONE BATTLE WITH SOME SERIOUSLY INTENSE HIDEOUS DEMONS and getting more and more used to creepy things that gush blood, Rin is pretty. Normal. So March popping up behind him caked in blood while he has no powers and is very animal-jittery was a genuine "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"
He gets the feeling March is way beyond his comprehension, so while he was DEFINITELY SCARED, he also managed to hit a stride of recognizing the interaction as a back alley shakedown. Which he has experience with!! March stuck to just insulting him too, which is also something he can deal with. He was also SO TIRED by that point and everything March did was SO OVERTLY THREATENING it just kind of glazed and contributed to shakedown-diffusion attitude and letting him push him around. He kind of sees what Hatter and Cheshire mean by saying you can kind of feel out how to talk to March...
He was doing okay until he killed a small animal, and that was just. Upsetting by itself '-'... So he considers himself off without any damage, probably just lucky, and will probably be hurrying past Celeste's floor now. His opinion is "WELP, THAT'S DANGEROUS." He also knows it was March that blinded Hatter afterward which again he just kind of feels is. Beyond his comprehension. He doesn't understand why half his team likes this guy and the more they talk about him / get ... hurt... the more he's like "I feel like he is some kind of thug that comes into the canary store and kicks things over until we pay him, and that's friendship somehow..."
He was pretty much just bullying him. Absolutely shameless and not attempting to hide it at all, the shake down was basically his attempt to test Rin's responses- Would he get violent? Buckle and show his belly? Be all arrogant and you don't scare me?
So it was a test to learn more about him, because March plays the thug version of twenty questions! On that Rin did really well, because he basically went along with March's dickishness without pushing back or rolling over and labeling himself an easy target.
Combat abilities: 1 (You are so sad right now.) Supernatural powers: ? (Can transform, demonic.) Weaknesses: Brother, exorcists (wat r an exorcist?) Likelihood of March randomly shanking to establish dominance: 2/10
the only adult on Rin's team is Hatter so CONGRATULATIONS you're actually basically Rin's first adult in this scenario. As hella orphaned and thus defaulted to forced independence as he is, THE MOMENT SHE RUFFLED HIS HEAD AND SAID SHE UNDERSTOOD LIKE HIS DAD USED TO, he just kinda buckled, hence his sudden fluster because it was so unexpected. She just kinda accidentally auto-topped...
It's kinda strange for him to describe things like slang and proper name usage so she SURE HAS AMNESIA but. Yea that jumped fast. He likes her '-'
WAIT UNTIL YOU FIND OUT THE SLANG THING ISN'T AMNESIA
Tempest, meanwhile, interprets the fluster as oh maybe he doesn't like being touched '^' But it's too cute I couldn't resist '^'
SHE LIKES HIM THO and thinks it's adorable that he is the complete opposite of his brother. (Also secretly a little pleased he'll let her call him Rin, because Okumura is a mouthful for her) Also she tends to like rebel types ANYWAY so yes. She'd like to get to know him more :U
He is kiiind of slotting him as a Mephisto-type figure where he can see he's... looking out for Rin, or saying naggy constructive things, but he's an asshole. They are kind of in the same category. There's a few differences like
- Hatter doesn't know anything about him 8U - Hatter isn't untouchable - Related to the above, Hatter's problems seem to be masochism in addition to sadism - He's less grateful to Hatter (the scale is different; Mephisto is literally the reason Rin is alive so Rin gives him a LOT of leeway/is more obedient) - Related to the above, he doesn't think Hatter's invested in him at all
Hatter had a horrible first impression in that he INTRODUCED HIMSELF AS CANARY'S PET MURDERER DOG and then Yukio admitted Hatter stabbed him. Which went as well as possible, since Yukio kind of damage controlled that information! Now Rin has confronted Hatter about that, and he does believe Hatter won't do it again, so he's kiiind of letting it go in the sense that it was framed in "losing control," which is a problem Rin understands, but he doesn't understand what makes Hatter lose control. WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE, BUDDY.
He also... inherently assumes adults as authority figures, so when one is NOT, it takes him a few incidents to actually not assume authority of an adult. SOMETHING IS WRONG? IT'S AN ADULT, IT SHOULD ACT LIKE ONE? Not that Rin doesn't see Shura is a slacker alcholic and Mephisto is a manipulative otaku (or that Neihauz (a teacher) tried to murder him), but they still Have It Together, and Know Better Than Rin. (even murder-teacher had a good reason really, thinks Rin) Hatter apparently may not, and that's a little difficult for Rin to parse. He will still kinda automatically respond obediently (in general) when Hatter makes his accurate observations, but this whole COMING HOME ALL HURT AND BLINDED AND FINE WITH THAT is really freaking Rin out on a simple empathy level, and also kind of a "but your type is supposed to be untouchable" level.
I SEE YOU FOLLOWED ME AROUND ALL DAY TO MAKE SURE I STAYED OUT OF TROUBLE, AND THEN GOT HORRIBLY HURT YOURSELF. OK!
I SEE YOU HAVE A MONSTER SIDE OF YOU THAT IS YOU BUT NEEDS TO BE SEALED AND IS GENERALLY UNAPPEALING AND PEOPLE HATE YOU FOR IT!!
WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!
Rin doesn't even know what to do with that information. Holy shit, someone dealing with something kind of different but kind of fundamentally the same! He wants to ask Kyou a million questions, but also doesn't want to press too hard. A DEEP, LONELY PART OF HIM that was ostracized for SO LONG and grew used to being hated because of an identity he was born with is just like "!! !! !!!!!" i don't know how else to put that. Is Kyou's situation different because it's a curse and not "himself"? Did he behave like a monster growing up like Rin? Does it matter??
Also apparently Kyou is pretty smart! What he got from that memory, other than the fact that Cheshire seems like a normal kid from normal Japan, is "Cheshire is good at school but bad at being manipulative," not "Cheshire is stupid" ='D so uh that's points in Kyou's favor since Rin respects being good at school a lot. Seeing someone else's memory was also really, really weird, and Cheshire just handing it to him like that was normal is kinda like... w-whoa dude. Even though it wasn't a secret or a scandalous memory, it still felt pretty personal.
Speaking of Amnesia vs NotAmnesia culture clash, FOR A FEW MINUTES CHESHIRE REALLY FREAKED RIN OUT with the hardboiled WELCOME TO HELL warnings. Now that he's been through a competition he understands much, much more how that conversation came to be, though there's some residue of defaulting to Cheshire Knows His Shit and Cheshire's Seen And Done Some Shit. Now it's more in addition to "and he was just basically a normal kid like me." He's more comfortable with Yosuke at this point entirely because Kyou was the one to give him that talk, but basically they're still his peer group and they've just gotten started. He's intensely curious about him.

OVERALL POSITIVE he will probably forget Rin and Yukio are even related because he has no concept of family and why it would be important that you are related anyway, but Rin'll stick out in his memory as an individual who is kinda cool and also has a sword.
will you be my punching friend rin

as of NOW, absolutely zero pings from Yukio, all the pings are from Rin.
ALSO I HAVE TO EDIT CALLING THE GAMES "GAMES" I'M GONNA MESS THAT UP SO OFTEN SOB

PUNCHING FRIENDS ARE GREAT it is the truest form of bonding. We can't be friends until you've stabbed me through with your sword, canon says so.

How is Rin doing with Canary as a whole so far?
no subject
I am curious how is your own team dynamic :O

Wat do you think of your kouhai

That's the first impression anyway ='D
ON RIN??
no subject
So it was a test to learn more about him, because March plays the thug version of twenty questions! On that Rin did really well, because he basically went along with March's dickishness without pushing back or rolling over and labeling himself an easy target.
Combat abilities: 1 (You are so sad right now.)
Supernatural powers: ? (Can transform, demonic.)
Weaknesses: Brother, exorcists (wat r an exorcist?)
Likelihood of March randomly shanking to establish dominance: 2/10

the only adult on Rin's team is Hatter so CONGRATULATIONS you're actually basically Rin's first adult in this scenario.
He likes her '-'
no subject

There's a few differences like
- Hatter doesn't know anything about him 8U
- Hatter isn't untouchable
- Related to the above, Hatter's problems seem to be masochism in addition to sadism
- He's less grateful to Hatter (the scale is different; Mephisto is literally the reason Rin is alive so Rin gives him a LOT of leeway/is more obedient)
- Related to the above, he doesn't think Hatter's invested in him at all
Hatter had a horrible first impression in that he INTRODUCED HIMSELF AS CANARY'S PET MURDERER DOG and then Yukio admitted Hatter stabbed him.
OK!

He also wants to see his kitty form for reasons.
